After multiple trips to the Great White North where I saw incredible wildlife but not a highly coveted great gray owl, I finally gave up and said to myself, “I’ll see one when I see one”. It was only then that it happened. I was in the Yukon in search of Canada lynx in a place and at a time of year where great gray owls are not expected to be seen. They were completely off my radar. Early one morning, while checking out a promising lynx locale before dawn, a large bird sat perched atop a medium sized pine tree. “A raven?” I thought to myself. No—it was in fact a great gray owl! Holy mackerel! I couldn’t contain my excitement. He quickly flew off in search of a meal, and I followed slowly behind as I trudged through the deep snow. He flew from tree to tree until finally he found his spot. Staring down at the ground for minutes, he could clearly hear something that I could not hear beneath that deep snow. Finally, he torpedoed down headfirst into the snow to try and snag his prey, likely a vole. Only his tail feathers stuck out, and there was absolutely no movement for what seemed like forever to me. I honestly worried he might be dead or seriously injured. Then there was movement. Twisting. Shaking. He finally popped his head out of the snow and when he looked up, I happened to be sitting right in front of him about 30 meters away! Unfortunately for him, he had no morning meal, but for me, it resulted in this incredible shot.
